New mentor joins MFA

The University of King’s College MFA in Creative Nonfiction program — which is welcoming its largest incoming class ever — has a new mentor. Gillian Turnbull will be joining the mentor team to work with students in the Class of 2021 cohort.

Gillian is no stranger to the MFA program. She herself is a Class of 2017 grad.

“The most rewarding thing about King’s for me was the community, created almost instantly when we arrived on campus,” she recalls. “Since graduating, I have felt lucky to continue being part of that community, both because of King’s efforts to keep us connected, and through my own writing group that emerged from the program. I’m honoured to be part of the community in a mentor capacity and look forward to forging new friendships with the class of 2021.”

Gillian Turnbull is the author of Sonic Booms: Making Music in an Oil Town. She holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology and is the former editor of Canadian Folk Music magazine. She has also written for The Walrus, The National Post, The Puritan, Hazlitt, No Depression, Penguin Eggs, BC Musician, and the Grove Dictionary of American Music. She teaches music at Ryerson University, co-founded the Wide Cut Weekend Roots Music Festival in Calgary, and has hosted radio shows in Edmonton and Toronto.
